Smart Freight Centre Partners With The Peel Region And Emterra Group On The Deployment Of Ontario’s First Electric Waste Collection Truck
The Smart Freight Centre (SFC) is proud to announce its partnership with Peel Region and Emterra Group on the deployment of Ontario’s first-ever electric waste collection vehicle. “This partnership epitomises SFC’s mission to improve the economic vibrancy of business, environmental sustainability, and quality of life for residents of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area,” says Elkafi Hassini, SFC Chair. It represents a significant stride toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly waste management process in the region.
Peel Region and Emterra Group have recently launched an innovative electric waste collection vehicle pilot program. Peel Region aims to reduce GHGs and promote sustainable waste management practices.
Emterra Group, a waste collection service provider with operations in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, as well as, the State of Michigan, has purchased Mack electric truck to deploy in several routes in Peel Region. Emterra Group would like to assess the electric vehicle full deployment feasibility and help its municipal and private sector customers achieve their carbon reduction targets effectively.
In this pilot project, the SFC will carry out a detailed analysis that will help ascertain the environmental, health, operational, and societal ramifications of using electric vehicles for waste collection. Additionally, supplementary air pollution data will be collated using advanced sensing technologies. Insights from this analysis will shape future EV expansion strategies for waste collection fleets, including mapping out charging infrastructure requirements.
