Abstract:
Urban areas face the challenge of making transport sustainable from the environment, competitiveness, and social perspectives. Municipalities, stakeholders, and users of urban freight transport are looking for measures that could reduce the negative impact of freight transport on the city environment. Urban sustainability challenges have been exacerbated by the growth in online purchasing and B2C deliveries, leading to increased complexity in urban freight with a large number of vans, small freight vehicles, and cargo-bikes.
An important difficulty in obtaining data for urban freight transport systems is the fact that urban deliveries involve private companies, which usually refuse to share data on their transactions, supplies, and transported goods with their competitors and the public sector. Moreover, there are no standardized research methods to be used for the analysis of urban logistics and support them with the appropriate knowledge resources.
In this seminar, the Polish-Norwegian research project GRASS-NEXT (GReen And SuStainable – kNowledge EXpanded freight Transport in cities) will be introduced. This project is focused on the concept of knowledge-based city logistics. This initiative develops tools for user-independent data acquisition and knowledge management for city logistics. This approach will make it possible to implement Sustainable Urban Logistics Plans. The activities include knowledge-based city logistics activity assessment, city logistics vehicle identification, real-time city logistics pollution modelling, and guidelines for Sustainable Urban Logistics Plans in Polish and Norwegian cities.
